What are the Side Effects of Abortion Pills

If you are about to abort or planning for an abortion you should be aware of the side effects that are caused once the pill is taken orally or vaginally. These side effects are common or may be unusual in some cases, be sure to check your doctor or a gynaecologist once the process starts. However, in many cases there won’t be any complications since the process takes place through pills and not through surgical method.

The given side effects are diagnosed and given by the best infertility doctors as well as gynaec specialist. Know these before you step into it or after you take up.

1. Bleeding

Usually the process involves taking up 2 pills – Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Once the pills is taken the bleeding will start with 8 hrs blocking the hormone and detaching the fetus from the uterus through continuous contraction making it to empty. The bleeding will be combined with spots and tissues and will be high comparing the normal menstrual bleeding. This may exceed to 17 days or can occur after 4 weeks. If you experience heavy bleeding within few hours you are advised to consult your doctor as soon as possible.

2. Pain

A pain may occur within 3 hours after taking the pills. This pain usually arises due to the contraction of the uterus and will be high compared to normal period pain/cramps. If the abortion is taken at the 9 month the pain will be heavy measured to the pain experienced when aborted in 7th month. You will be provided with pain killers since you experience a lot more pain than usual. Suggest a doctor if you have more pain in the pelvis or in the back.

3. Nausea and vomiting

Vomiting sensation and nausea will be experienced when taken abortion pills and it can last long for 2 days. Usually you will feel this once the first pill is given. Make sure you don’t nausea within one hour since that may be ineffective and need an alternate medication to be done immediately.

4. Diarrhea & fever

Diarrhea is common and women may excrete loose and watery stools after taken the pills. This should last only one day and if it exceeds you must consult a doctor soon. Whereas fever may occur usually when taken the first pill (Mifepristone) but its unusual if it continues after taking Misoprostol.

5. Head pain

This is common due to hormonal variations and can lead to muscle weakness and dizziness. You can lay and rest since it takes time for your system to settle normally. Headaches may persist for 2 days and if it exceeds try connecting your doctor about this.

6. Incomplete abortion

Sometimes taking pills doesn’t leads to complete abortion. You may have bleeding but still the fetus may remain alive. You are advised to go for a follow up checkup to know your status after a week. Or at times you may experience some pregnancy symptoms so you should suggest a doctor advice immediately.

7. Infections

Infections may result in the form of heavy bleeding or fever after the pills are taken and these infections doesn’t occur if the medicine is taken.

Remember to consult a doctor before you take an abortion pill, don’t buy or take it from your self-conscious since it can lead bad results both physically and mentally.
